Lumbar Surgery

The spine consists of 33 vertebrae that protect the spinal cord and provide stability to the torso. The lower section of the spine is called the lumbar spine. This area has five vertebrae. These vertebrae are the largest of the entire spine.

Injuries to the lumbar spine are the most common back injuries since this is where most of your weight-bearing, and body movement occurs. A severe injury, or even repetitive minor injuries can damage the parts of the lumbar spine.

There are several procedures that can be performed to relieve back pain. When all conservative methods have failed, lumbar surgery may be performed. Some different types of lumbar surgery include, bone grafts, lumbar laminectomy, and lumbar fusion.

Many patients will notice immediate improvement after the surgery is performed; however, several months of rehabilitation are still needed to gain all of the benefits of the surgery.
